Preschool Writing Area

Writing is an important part of literacy development. Writing areas in preschool are gaining popularity. Here are some tips.

Goals/Skills:

• Increase awareness of language and literacy in the classroom environment and in the child's world.
• Give children opportunities to explore the written word, and practice writing.
• Develop small muscle skills and eye-hand coordination.
• Help prepare children for the transition and expectations in Kindergarten.

Supervision and Tips:

• Most children will need to be taught how to hold a pencil (with the pincher-grip). Children should also be taught to use pencils for the correct purpose - and not as a toy or a weapon.
• Use positive reinforcement as a tool to encourage children. Praise effort, attempts, and progress.
