Valentine Art Activities
Heart Rubbings
Cut out different size hearts out of sandpaper. Have children put a thin piece of paper over the hearts and rub with a crayon.
Marble Heart Painting
Cut out hearts to fit into a large heart shaped candy box. Place the paper into the box with marbles that have been dipped into red and pink paints. Allow children to roll the marbles around to create a unique marble painting.
Heart Cookie Cutter Prints
Get a variety of heart/valentine cookie cutters. Have children dip them into paint and 'stamp' on paper or cards.
Collage Frames
Cut out picture frames using craft foam. Provide a variety of supplies for children to decorate their frame (candy hearts, stickers, foam cut-outs, etc.) Take a picture of each child and glue onto the frame as a gift to parents.
Valentine Math and Science
Candy Heart Math
Give each child a box of candy hearts. Have them guess how many hearts are in the box. Count the hearts and sort by color or phrase. Children can also make patterns using the colors.
Candy Kiss Estimate
Have a bowl of Hershey Kisses. Each child estimates how many kisses they can hold in one hand. They reach into the bowl and grab a handfull then count the actual number. Record guesses and actual counts on a chart and continue with each child.
Carnation Science
Add red food coloring to a glass of water. Place a white carnation in the water and have the children observe for the next few days. The carnation will become red. If each child does this, they can take the flower to a parent for a Valentine's Day gift.
Valentine Movement
Pass The Heart
Have a paper heart cut-out or stuffed heart for your children to pass. When the music stops the child holding the heart goes and sits in Valentine's Land (a specific place in your classroom):
Pass the heart around, pass the heart around.
Pass the heart along, pass the heart around.
Pass the heart around, as we sing this song.
It is Valentine's, it is Valentine's
It is Valentine's Day
It is Valentine's, it is Valentine's
And we pass the heart this way, when the music stops
When the music stops, and the heart is in your hand
When the music stops, when the music stops
Enter Valentine's Land
Who Has the Valentine?
Choose an a person to be "Cupid". Others stand in circle facing each other with hands behind their backs. "Valentine" passer walks around the outside of the circle, pretending to put the valentine in each hand - but really only puts it in one. All children say, "Valentine, valentine, who has the valentine? "Cupid" guesses. If correct, the valentine passer becomes "Cupid".
Valentine Snacks
Heart Toast
Make one piece of toast for each child. Have them use a heart cookie cutter to cut out a heart. Give them choices of spreads (butter, cream cheese, jelly, peanut butter) and red and pink sprinkles.
